Handball on a nationwide recruitment

Hand Ball Fiji has launched a nationwide recruitment campaign to identify players for its men’s Under-17 and U19 national teams ahead of the International Handball Federation (IHF) Trophy Oceania in Auckland, New Zealand, from December 6-11.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, Hand Ball Fiji organiser Tirisiane Logavatu said the campaign would give aspiring athletes across the country an opportunity to be considered for the national development programme and possible national selection.

“We are seeking talented young athletes, including current handball players and athletes from other sports such as rugby, football, basketball, volleyball, athletics and netball,” Logavatu said.

She said the goal was to build competitive squads capable of representing Fiji on the international stage while strengthening the long-term development of handball in the country.

Preparations have already begun with the launch of the recruitment drive, which includes engagement with schools, sporting clubs and community organisations around the country.

Logavatu said the federation aims to attract between 30 and 50 athletes for screening and development.

“From this pool, we expect to narrow the group to approximately 20 to 25 players in each age category before selecting the final travelling squads,” she said.

“The focus will not only be on technical ability but also on athletic potential, commitment, discipline and the ability to work within a team environment.”

Logavatu said Fiji had an abundance of untapped sporting talent and the programme would provide young athletes with a pathway to represent the country internationally.

“We encourage all eligible athletes to register their interest before July 22, 2026,” she said.

The recruitment has been commencing from June 23 and will end on July 22.
