A mother-and-daughter combination emerged victorious at the Islands Electric-sponsored Charity Lawn Bowls Tournament held at the Lautoka Bowling Club over the weekend.
Veteran Lautoka bowler Ili Seru and her daughter, Bulou Vuta, defeated Abraham Singh and Jare Josaia 9-4 in the final to claim the top prize.
The pair booked their place in the final after a dominant 13-1 victory over Tasheen Stuart and Ray Singh in the semi-final.
“I would normally play in the business house competition, but my mother is an elite player,” said Vuta.
She said it was encouraging to see local and international bowlers, who had remained in the country after competing in the Sunny West Bowls tournament, taking part in the charity event.
National representative Rajnesh Raju Prasad acknowledged the efforts of club trustee Raymond Singh in making the event a success.
“A total of 16 teams took part in the two-bowl open pairs format featuring eight-end games, and it was a great success,” he said.
The event was co-sponsored by Ezzy Par Golf, Anjay Sharma, Roneel Prakash, Amitesh Chandra and Reginald Ram.
Drasa Avenue School head teacher Nilesh Sharma said funds raised from the tournament would go towards the school’s renovation programme.
“The school building is among the first country-registered and has been affected by termite infestation,” he said.
“The funding from this event will assist in restoring the institution, compliance with OHS, and it is also a UNESCO heritage landmark.”
Club trustee Raymond Singh said the tournament successfully combined sport and community support, with proceeds helping to preserve an important educational institution while bringing together bowlers from Fiji and abroad.
