The Nausori men’s volleyball team made a positive start to their campaign at the Vulaca Volleyball Championship by winning two matches at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva yesterday.
Nausori Volleyball Association president and player Nacanieli Speigth said the team was pleased with their performance.
“We won our first two matches, and this is the first day of the Vulaca Championship,” Speigth said.
He acknowledged the financial challenges faced by the sport.
“As a minor sport, the challenges are mainly financial.
“Volleyball attracts many unemployed youths who are struggling in life and meeting financial demands is always a challenge,” he said.
Speigth said to be part of the tournament was already a major achievement.
“Being here is a huge achievement for us. The wins are just icing on the cake, and we thank God and Fiji Volleyball for giving us this opportunity.”
He said all teams in the tournament were well-prepared and competition would be tough.
“Every team is prepared physically, mentally and spiritually.
“The team that remains resilient in all areas will come out on top,” Speigth said.
He added that the team would review their matches to improve ahead of the next games.
“We will go back, review our mistakes and work on simple things like our court positioning,” he said.
The Nausori men’s team is aiming for a top eight finish to qualify for the Vanua Championship.
“That is our focus,” Speigth added.
The competition continues today.
