Twenty five (25) schools and 61 teams are part of the Vodafone Fiji Secondary Schools basketball championship, which began in Suva yesterday.
Basketball Fiji acting chief operations officer, William Peter said this year’s meet was a much anticipated one.
While Magodro Secondary School from Bukuya, Ba is the only new inclusion some schools have returned after a lapse of years.
“Magodro Secondary is here to participate in the under-19 boys category,” he said.

“We got Ba Pro who is returning after eight years of missing out and Lelean Memorial School makes a return and the regular schools Queen Victoria School, Ratu Kadavulevu School, Adi Cakobau School and the Suva school and Western schools.”
Peter said this year’s competition was divided into three venues; Yat Sen School hosted the U17 grades, Vodafone Arena Hall A is the U15 grades, Lambert Hall and FMF Gym are the U19 grades.
The pool matches continues today while the semifinals and finals will be held at the Vodafone Arena main hall.

Future plans
Peter indicated Basketball Fiji’s plan is to set-up a Fiji Secondary Schools basketball association which will include stabling zone competitions.
“We want to focus on building at the grassroots level to feed into our national teams.
“We also want to ensure to have a primary school association to feed into our secondary school and that is our plan for 2026.
“We also hope to renew our partnership with Vodafone.”
