Fiji strengthens anti-doping push

Sitiveni Rokoro has been appointed as the chief executive officer for Drug Free Sports Fiji (DFSF) established through the NADO (National Anti-Doping Organisation) bill.
His role will be effective from March 16.
The NADO bill was proposed by the Minister of Youth and Sport Jese Saukuru to establish a legal framework for a NADO to govern anti-doping in sports in 2023 and was passed by cabinet.

This was held in consultations with sporting bodies through a sporting conference.
Rokoro acknowledged the Ministry of Youth of Sports and Drug Free Sports Fiji for his appointment.
“It is the first in the Pacific to establish a national anti-doping organisation,” Rokoro said.
“We will support the intention of government and DFSF in promoting clean sports in Fiji and protecting our athletes.”
Chairman Kamlesh Krishna DFSF was an existing organisation under ONOC (Oceania Nation Olympic Committee) and the FASANOC (Fiji Association of Sport & National Olympic Committee) banner supported through World Anti-Doping Organisation.
“The NADO bill is currently being enforced through DFSF as an independent entity,” Krishna said.
He said DFSF is working with WADA (World Anti-doping Agency) and co-partners UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) on the implementation and enforcement of the requirements of World anti-doping entity in a holistic manner.
“A three-year strategic plan which will be initiated through the new CEO in its office and it will be performing the accountability mechanisms through the Board of Drug Free Sports Fiji,” he said.
Drug Free Sports Fiji have been part of the Oceania regional Anti-doping organisation.
“Fiji is currently co-oped as the chair for finance subcommittee in Oceania regional anti-doping organisation and performs a correlation and invoking a group with the 17 small island states including observer of sports integrity Australia and New Zealand,” Krishna said.
“Fiji has climbed up to the tier two group from tier three and also ensured that it stands out when it comes to its commitment to the world stage to perform both as accountable to clean sports.”
