Local Order of Merit leader Tomasi Tuivuna heads into the Sheraton Golf Classic in form after a runner-up finish at the Vonu Pro-Am, as Fiji’s top golfers prepare to test themselves against an international field at Denarau.
Tuivuna shot 145 and narrowly missed out on the professional title at the Vonu Pro-Am, finishing second behind Roneel Prakash, who carded a four-under-par 140 (70, 70). Amitesh Chandra finished third on 146 in the two-day event.
“The competition was looking strong, with 112 players taking part,” Tuivuna said.
“This week the tournament is expected to host 200 overseas golfers and 28 sponsors. The field includes 56 professionals, about 18 women golfers and the remainder amateur men. Preparation has been good, but it all comes down to the mindset on the greens.”
Tuivuna remains focused on this week’s Sheraton Golf Classic, where he is expected to face strong competition from international golfers, including Josh Geary and Glenn Millin.
Prakash will be among the leading local professionals in the field, while Shakil Pillay will compete in the amateur division.
“The next stop is the Sheraton Golf Classic. It is nothing out of the ordinary that I have prepared for. It is just another event. I will go out there, enjoy the four days and meet new people along the way,” Prakash said.
Regarded as one of the premier events on the Pacific golfing calendar, the Sheraton Golf Classic will run from June 2 to 7.
Sheraton Cluster Marketing Executive – Fiji, Torika Cagi, said the tournament would bring together top golfers, distinguished guests, and vibrant entertainment.
“It will offer an exciting showcase of talent and camaraderie in a stunning setting,” she said.
The total prize purse is $110,000, divided across various categories.
The Legends Golf tournament will be played from June 9 to 11.
Meanwhile, the overall gross amateur winners at the Vonu Pro-Am were Tracey Salthouse (160) in the women’s division and Ryan Kumar (152) in the men’s division. Steven Cole won the men’s net category with 132.
