All players who are eligible to represent the Flying Fijians in the July Test matches of the Rugby Championship are now being closely monitored.
This was told to SUNsports yesterday by Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne.
He said the monitoring of the Europe-based players is based on their game day performance and their response towards training.
Byrne indicated that the Head of Athletic Performance has been following each player’s progress, minutes played and their health.
“Also, there has been communication with the clubs, which if it is only necessary,” he said.
“The coaches have been watching the games and will commence their selection meetings this month.”
Byrne said the monitoring of the Europe-based players is focused on those who is eligible to play for Fiji.
The Europe-based players who have been playing well are Jiuta Wainiqolo, Tevita Ratuva, Josua Tuisova, Vinaya Habosi, Lekima Tagitagivalu, Peniasi Dakuwaqa, Nathan Hughes, Luke Tagi, Sireli Maqala, Caleb Muntz, Albert Tuisue, Eroni Mawi, Kalaveti Ravouvou, Viliame Mata, Alivereti Duguivalu, Vilimoni Botitu, Vuate Karawalevu, Selestino Ravutaumada, Levani Botia and the list goes on.
“All our Flying Fijians have performed well. I’ve been particularly impressed with the way Frank Lomani has come back from a serious injury. His two great tackles to stop the Hurricanes momentum after moving to the shows he is back as strong as ever.”
The wily coach said former Wallabies and now Drua halfback Issak Fines-Leleiwasa would be eligible to represent Fiji in late September.
“It gives a little more depth in the halfback position. And as such will be considered for selection along with all other available players.”
The Flying Fijians face Wales on July 4 at Cardiff City Stadium followed by the clash at England on July 11 at Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool. Then Scotland on July 18 at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh.
