Highlanders targets Skipper Cup redemption

Naitasiri Rugby Union is determined to end a 15-year wait for the Skipper Cup title while defending the Farebrother Trophy this season.

The Highlanders have suffered heartbreak in their past three grand final appearances, losing to Malolo 41-26 last year, Nadi 16-11 in 2022 and Suva 16-13 in 2020.

Their last Skipper Cup title was in 2010.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, Naitasiri Rugby Union coaching director and former head coach Ilaitia Tuisese Jnr said reclaiming the Skipper Cup is the team’s top priority.

“Our main goal this year is to bring the Skipper Cup back to the highlands of Naitasiri.

“We have reached three consecutive finals but lost all three. This year the team is building well, and our target is to win the Skipper Cup and defend the Farebrother Trophy,” Tuisese said.

The squad has completed 10 weeks of preparation, combining structured training with club competition matches, ahead of Saturday’s opening-round clash against Rewa at Burebasaga Grounds.

Despite losing 12 players from last season, Tuisese is confident the union’s player development system has produced capable replacements.

“We have a system where players who perform well in club games earn opportunities. Around 80 per cent of this year’s squad are new players, while 20 per cent are experienced players.”

Tuisese expects another highly competitive Skipper Cup campaign.

“Every team has improved, so every match will be crucial. We cannot afford to underestimate any opponent.”

He also called on Naitasiri supporters to get behind the team for the season opener.

“I invite all the people of the highlands of Naitasiri to come in numbers and support us in our opening Skipper Cup match against Rewa at Burebasaga Grounds.”

The highlanders hope this season will finally end their long wait for the Skipper Cup title while maintaining their grip on the prestigious Farebrother Trophy.

The match kicks off at 3pm.
