The Young Silver Bullet volleyball club (pictured) will host a volleyball tournament for Western youths at the Natokawaqa Multipurpose Court in Lautoka on Saturday.
Speaking to SUNsports yesterday tournament organiser and club president Serevi Radrokai said the tournament is about getting youths together and to draw them away from drug usage.
“One of the reasons we organised this tournament is to keep youths away from social issues that are currently facing them today,” he said.
“These are drugs and a lot of our youths are also dropping out from schools. We’re engaging them to participate in sports, maybe one day they could represent Fiji in volleyball.”
Radrokai said officials from the Fiji Police Force, Ministry of Health along with the Ministry of Youth and Sports will be at the tournament.
He said the challenges faced in organising the volleyball tournament is the lack of financial support.
“At the moment we don’t have a sponsor but we’ve managed to gain funds by fundraising,” he said.
Radrokai said they are targeting 12 teams.
“At the moment we have seven men’s teams that have confirmed their registration and this year we are including the women’s category which is to have four teams,” he said.
Radrokai also urged their supporters to come out in numbers to support the youths.
