The Vesida One men’s volleyball team has set their eyes on the Tribal Risk Nasinu Grassroot Volleyball tournament title.

This is after they defeated the Easternville One side team three sets to one in the first round of the tournament at Vodafone Arena, Suva on Saturday.

Captain Watisoni Bukalidi acknowledged the initiative by the Nasinu volleyball association in using sport as a platform in the fight against drugs.

“We encouraged the youths to take part in this tournament to steer them away from a dark path into drugs,” he said.

“We want to win this tournament as the prize money is quite a large sum.”

Bukalidi said the team will need to go back to regroup and work on their weaknesses on the court.

“Most of our players are students still in High school, so we get them involved in the sport,” he said.

“Most of us reside in the housing homes so we don’t have a rugby field to play in, so we play volleyball instead.”

Bukalidi and his teammates were also part of the Nasinu association volleyball teams.

“We ask for the support of the people to attend the tournament and cheer on their team,” he said.

“During our preparation some of us couldn’t attend training due to work schedules.”

Bukalidi was pleased with his players’ work rate on the court.

“I want to thank the students for giving their time, we weren’t hard on them during training because they are still students in school,” he said.

“It’s good they still prioritize school and I want them to work hard so they can succeed in life.”
