Engagament in sports will divert youths away from drug abuse.

The Raiwaqa Youth Volleyball Association (RYVA) is on track to revive volleyball in their neighbourhood.

Last week they kicked off with the weekly inter-lane competition which saw about 15 teams after a lapse of four years.

RYVA president Kini Tamanitoakula hopes that the revival of volleyball would engage more youths and divert them away from committing crimes and drug abuse.

“We’re trying to affiliate ourselves with Fiji Volleyball Federation. It has been four years since we last had active volleyball in Raiwaqa,” Tamanitoakula said.

Having active weekly competition is one of the requirements for associations to be affiliated with the national body.

“Our big goal is to participate in is the competition for that is sanctioned by FVF including the Easter Championship.

“We’re starting slowly. We’ve finally secured a lot of things at the moment.”

Tamanitoakula added they’re working together with basketball and touch teams in Raiwaqa to build the sport.

“Right now we only have a few lanes that are present at the moment, but we’re also looking to have others.”

The teams include Derrick, Boston, Inside Out and Groundsmen.
