Ayaan Mumtaz, 18, is already charting a future driven by ambition, discipline, and a passion for technology.

The Central College Lautoka dux has emerged as one of the school’s most outstanding students, with a clear goal of becoming a software engineer specialising in artificial intelligence (AI) and intelligent systems.

“My passion for artificial intelligence and coding naturally led me to software engineering,” he said.

“I enjoy breaking down complex problems and building solutions that can make a real-world impact.”

Born in India, Ayaan later moved to Fiji, a journey he says shaped his outlook on life.

“Over the years, Fiji has become my home. Becoming a Fijian citizen taught me adaptability and resilience, and it broadened my perspective on life.”

Ayaan’s academic record speaks for itself. He achieved level topper positions in Year 11 and Year 12 before claiming the dux award in Year 13 last year.

He also received Outstanding Student awards in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Technical Drawing across multiple years.

He was recognised as the Top Tech Science Student in Year 12 by the University of the South Pacific.

Beyond the classroom, Ayaan served as a school prefect in Year 11 and later as a senior school prefect, while actively participating in national mathematics and chemistry competitions, essay writing contests, and community initiatives such as environmental clean-up drives.

Ayaan credits his parents and teachers for keeping him grounded.

“Their guidance and constant support pushed me to stay disciplined and focused, even during stressful times,” he said.

Ayaan admits that balancing academics and extracurricular activities was challenging, but those moments built mental strength and time-management skills.

His message to young people is simple yet powerful: “Always believe in yourself. Don’t compare your journey with others. Never give up, especially when you are at your lowest; that’s when growth begins."
