Telecom Fiji Limited (TFL) has marked a historic milestone with the official launch of its 5G network in Suva today, positioning Fiji among the countries advancing into the next generation of digital connectivity.
Fiji has been rapidly investing in digital transformation in recent years, with strong government support for modern infrastructure and nationwide connectivity.
Demands for faster, more reliable internet have increased due to online education, business digitalisation, and the growing use of e-government services.

While 3G and 4G networks have supported the country for the past decade, 5G promises a major leap forward with faster speeds, lower latency, and the capacity to power new technology, devices, and advanced emergency communication systems.
TFL chief executive officer Charles Goundar explained that the 5G deployment will be delivered in four phases, as required under the national spectrum licence. The first phase of the 5G rollout covers Suva, Nadi, Lautoka, Denarau, Navua, Nausori and Nasinu, with additional areas scheduled in the coming months.
Phase 1 is now live, while Phase 2 is scheduled for mid-2025. The company aims to complete most of Phase 3 and parts of Phase 4 by the end of next year, well ahead of the 2027 national requirement.
Mr Goundar said Telecom Fiji has also expanded its fibre backbone, which supports all mobile technologies.
“Fibre underpins everything. It is essential for strong 5G coverage and reliable communication across Fiji,” he said. He also confirmed partnerships with global technology players such as Google and Starlink to strengthen Fiji’s connectivity ecosystem.
Minister for Policing and Communications Ioane Naivalurua described the launch as “a major achievement for Fiji’s future,” saying the technology will strengthen national productivity, modernise services, and help close the digital divide.
“5G is not just a faster network; it marks a shift in how Fiji will operate, innovate and grow,” he said. “It will support education, healthcare, e-government services and enhance national security. Today, it is about connecting the world to Fiji.”
Mr Naivalurua also noted that the launch aligns with the government’s digital transformation agenda and the upcoming National Digital Strategy.
Both leaders said the 5G launch is only the beginning. As Mr Naivalurua stated: “Today is about connecting the world to Fiji. And with 5G, we are ready for the future.”
