Investing in children’s early years is crucial to helping them walk into school with confidence and the foundational skills they need to succeed, says UNICEF Pacific's Deputy Representative.
Anna Smeby made the remarks yesterday at the launch of the Yavutu Programme, a US$5 million (FJ$11.4 million) initiative targeting pre-primary to Year 3 education.
“The early years are where we can make the biggest difference,” she said.

“The Yavutu programme is about giving every child, especially the most vulnerable, a strong foundation for learning and life.”
Ms Smeby said when Government invests early, it helps children develop the confidence and skills needed for school and beyond.
“By building evidence and experience in better supporting teachers in their critical role, Fiji is able to strengthen its education system toward sustainable, scalable, and transformative change,” she said.
The four-year programme will focus on three key areas: empowering teachers and learners, strengthening system capacity, and improving the system framework.
Teachers will receive training, tools, and support to create inclusive, engaging, and play-based learning environments where children feel safe and ready to thrive.
