Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) senior operations officer, Jikoibau Matawalu, has been suspended by the union pending investigation.

His lawyer, Simione Valenitabua confirmed yesterday.

Allegations over the improper use of the FRU credit card facility resulted in the suspension, sources said.

Matawalu joined FRU in July, 2020, as development officer; he was the Nadroga Rugby Union president then.

Valenitabua said Matawalu is a dedicated and long-serving servant of Fiji rugby and he is co-operating with the FRU’s internal processes and looks forward to a fair and proper resolution of the matter.

“We have full confidence that once all facts are presented, it will be clear that Matawalu has acted with integrity and in the best interests of the sport at all times,” Valenitabua said.

“We trust the FRU will conduct its investigation in accordance with its own policies and the principles of natural justice.

“Out of respect for the ongoing process, we will not be providing further comment at this time,” he added.

It is understood that a finance officer has also been suspended.

When asked if the FRU board was aware of the suspension of the two staff, chairman John Sanday said: “The board is kept informed of important developments. Yes. It’s an operational matter and for the chief executive officer’s attention.”

Questions sent to acting FRU chief executive officer Koli Sewabu last week regarding the matter remained unanswered.
