Teach children values of love, respect: Khan

Vanua Levu Muslim League trustee Bashir Khan has urged parents to teach their children about Prophet Muhammad and his message of love and respect, saying these values can help young people become responsible citizens in Fiji’s multicultural society.

Mr Khan made the call as about 600 people gathered at the mosque to commemorate Prophet Muhammad’s birthday.

He said families should ensure children understood why the occasion was celebrated and the values behind it.

Mr Khan said learning about Prophet Muhammad’s teachings could help children respect people from different backgrounds and steer them away from harmful activities.

He also called on people to be grateful to the Government for designating a public holiday to commemorate Prophet Muhammad’s birthday.

Mr Khan said the holiday provided Muslim devotees with an opportunity to gather with family and friends at the mosque, reflect on the Prophet’s life and remember his teachings.

“Since we built this Vanua Levu Muslim League in 1984, every year except during COVID-19, we dedicated a day just to celebrate Prophet Muhammad’s birthday,” Mr Khan said.

He said the celebrations also welcomed people of different faiths.

“We also welcomed the presence of devotees from different religions where we had the chance to send out the message of love and respect that our Prophet Muhammad has taught us.”

Among those taking part was Mr Khan’s 13-year-old grandson, Yasser Khan, who received praise from the gathering after reciting a poem.
