Fiji’s strength lies in communities helping one another: Bulitavu

The teachings of Prophet Muhammad on service, compassion and unity can help strengthen Fiji’s families and communities, Minister for Rural, Maritime Development and Disaster Management Mosese Bulitavu says.

Mr Bulitavu said true strength was measured not only by personal achievements but also by how people served others and contributed to their wellbeing.

He made the comments as chief guest during the Prophet Muhammad birthday celebration at Vunimoli Jame Masjid in Labasa today.

Mr Bulitavu said the principle of serving others was also central to the work of Government.

“As the Minister responsible for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, I have witnessed first-hand the importance of communities standing together, particularly during times of hardship and disaster,” Mr Bulitavu said.

“Whether it is responding to a natural disaster, supporting vulnerable families, improving rural infrastructure or creating opportunities for our young people, the strength of Fiji has always been found in our communities and in our willingness to help one another.”

He said compassion, responsibility, unity and service were important not only in homes and places of worship, but also in building a stronger Fiji.

Mr Bulitavu said the Muslim community had an important role in strengthening families, supporting young people and promoting education.

“As members of the Muslim community in Fiji, we have an important role to play in strengthening our families, supporting our young people, promoting education and contributing positively to the development of our communities and our nation,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of investing in children and instilling strong values in the next generation.

“Our children are our greatest investment and the future of Fiji.

“It is therefore our shared responsibility to guide them not only in understanding the history and teachings of our faith, but also in living by the values demonstrated by Prophet Muhammad — respect for parents and elders, kindness towards others, honesty in our dealings, respect for knowledge, compassion for those in need and service to humanity.”

Mr Bulitavu said these values transcended religious and cultural boundaries.

Youth urged to build strong character

At a separate Prophet Muhammad birthday celebration at Jamaitul Muslimeen Wainikoro Mosque in Labasa on Sunday, Fiji Police Force Acting Divisional Traffic Officer Northern Acting Superintendent of Police Rakesh Goundar called on young people to embrace respect, discipline, honesty and compassion.

Acting SP Goundar told youths that the values they practised today would influence Fiji’s future.

“Your character today will help shape the future of our families and our nation,” Acting SP Goundar said.

“The life of Prophet Muhammad is a source of guidance, wisdom and inspiration for all of us.

“His teachings remind us of the importance of peace, kindness, patience, honesty, forgiveness, compassion and respect for one another.”

He said Prophet Muhammad taught people to care for the poor, support those in need, respect parents and elders, show kindness to children and live peacefully with others.

“These values still remain important in our families and communities today,” he said.

Acting SP Goundar said the message of peace and unity was particularly important when communities faced disagreements and divisions.

“In today’s world, where we sometimes face disagreements, challenges and divisions, the message of peace and unity is more important than ever.

“Let us therefore use such occasions to strengthen our relationships, promote understanding and work together for the betterment of our communities.”

He urged people to continue respecting one another regardless of their differences.
