A major commercial property fire in Samabula, Suva, on Monday night has left several tenants displaced after a building was destroyed in a fast-moving blaze.
The fire broke out at about 8.30pm at the Memon Investment property along Kaka Street, where six adults were inside at the time.
Quick action by tenants and caretaker Naikasio Uduvakavo ensured everyone escaped safely before flames rapidly engulfed the building.

Mr Uduvakavo said he heard screams for help coming from one of the tenants’ rooms and immediately rushed to assist.
“It was the first time I had experienced something like this, and I didn’t know how to react,” he said.
“The only thing I could do was make sure the tenants were safe. I didn’t even have time to think or process what was happening.”
He described the incident as “a nightmare”, while tenants remained in shock after witnessing the inferno.
The National Fire Authority said the emergency call was received at 9.06pm, prompting firefighters from Suva Fire Station to respond immediately.
Fire appliances F77 and F9 arrived at the scene within five minutes.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the property fully engulfed in flames.
The structure reportedly housed offices, rental car operations and spare parts storage facilities.
Additional support from Valelevu Fire Station was deployed to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby properties.
The building measured about 40 metres by 28 metres and sustained 100 per cent damage.
Estimated losses are believed to be around $400,000.
National Fire Authority chief executive officer Puamau Sowane expressed concern over the growing number of structural fires around the country.
“The increasing number of structural fires is alarming and serves as a reminder for families and business operators to take fire safety seriously at all times,” he said.
“Fortunately, no lives were lost in this incident because occupants were able to evacuate quickly.”
Mr Sowane said the incident highlighted the importance of having an escape plan and ensuring everyone knew what to do during a fire emergency.
Homeowners, tenants and business operators have been urged to regularly inspect electrical wiring, avoid overloading power outlets and ensure exits remain clear at all times.
Police and National Fire Authority investigators are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.
