Inclusive sports meet aims to discover Fiji's future Paralympians

The Central Eastern Council of Special and Inclusive Educators (CECSIE) believes its annual sports meet is helping uncover Fiji's next generation of Paralympians while giving young athletes with special needs a platform to showcase their talents.

The two-day competition began yesterday at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva and concludes today.

Organising committee representative and Hilton Special School teacher Joseva Verevou said the event continued to demonstrate the important role sport played in developing young athletes with additional needs.

"As teachers, we see some children struggle in the classroom, but on the sporting field we see a completely different side of them," Mr Verevou said.

"Sport builds confidence and allows teachers and coaches to identify their strengths. Some of these children have the potential to represent Fiji at the Paralympic Games and other national competitions."

Students from special and mainstream schools in Suva, Nausori and Levuka are taking part, with the event promoting inclusion through sport.

"The interaction between participants from special schools and able-bodied students creates understanding, friendship and learning. That's one of the biggest achievements of these games," he said.

Mr Verevou said organisers hoped to expand the event next year by including more schools and special education organisations from around the country.

He said Paralympic gold medallist Iliesa Delana remained an inspiration for young athletes.

"If Iliesa Delana could achieve success, these young children can too. We must continue supporting them and giving them opportunities to succeed."

Mr Verevou also thanked major sponsors Extra and McDonald's for their continued support of the annual event.
