Limited funding is slowing down efforts to fix poor drainage systems in Fiji.
This left communities at risk during heavy rain and floods in the recent weeks, said the Acting permanent secretary for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Mitieli Cama.
He revealed funding constraints were one of the biggest challenges Fiji faced in tackling long-standing drainage issues.
“We are trying our best to come together and pool resources with municipalities, town councils, and housing authorities to find solutions,” Mr Cama said.
Heavy rain in the past few days flooded communities in the Central Division such as Waidamudamu Settlement in Koronivia, Davuilevu (Mataika Road and Naqiliso Settlement), Vunimono Government Quarters, parts of Narere in Nasinu (River Road), and Nausori Town, particularly around the Shop N Save Supermarket and Nausori Market.
“Some of the problems come from residential areas, and we need to sit with stakeholders to discuss how to fix them together,” he said.
The lack of proper drainage not only puts homes and livelihoods at risk, but also have threatens schools, roads, and businesses during extreme weather events.
Authorities urge Fijians to take precautions and prepare for potential flooding.
