Families in low-lying areas of Nadi are seeking early evacuation as heavy rain continues, with many taking shelter before floodwaters reach their homes.

Timoci Tuiqara, a father of four, was among evacuees at Andrews Primary School, saying early preparedness was critical for families like his.

The 50-year-old, originally from Navosa, lives with his family at Nawaka Tramline Settlement and said evacuation had become routine during periods of severe weather.

He said despite the rain, families carried clothes, bedding and cooking utensils as they made their way to safety.

“For the safety of my children, I always go to the evacuation centre early,” Mr Tuiqara said.

“Even when our area is not yet flooded, I make sure we leave early. People often wait until water rises into their homes before trying to evacuate.

“We can only prepare properly during the day. For those of us with small children, we have to be mindful of their safety.”

Mr Tuiqara works for a roading construction company while his wife is employed as a maid.

Assistant school manager Veveni Waqa said about 30 families had already taken shelter, filling the first row of classrooms.

He said more evacuees were expected, with another row of classrooms likely to be filled.

Mr Waqa said those sheltering at the school were from Nawaka Tramline Settlement and Nawaijikuma Settlement.
