Heavy rain alert in force across Fiji

Members of the public are advised to remain alert, take necessary precautions.

A heavy rain alert is now in force for the whole of Fiji, with wet weather expected to continue over the next few days.

The Fiji Meteorological Service says a slow-moving trough of low pressure is affecting the country and is expected to strengthen from tomorrow. This system is bringing increased cloud, rain and thunderstorms across the Fiji group.


Forecast for Fiji:
Occasional rain, heavy at times, with a few thunderstorms.

The forecast confidence is moderate.

In the past 24 hours, significant rainfall has already been recorded in several areas, including:

Wairikicake: 74mm

Dreketilailai: 76.5mm

Tubenasolo: 94.5mm

Nanoko: 80mm


Possible impacts include:

  • Flash flooding in flood-prone and low-lying areas, including informal settlements and businesses
  • Flooding at Irish crossings, leading to traffic disruptions
  • Surface flooding on streets in urban areas with poor drainage
  • Slippery roads and reduced visibility during heavy rain, increasing the risk of accidents
