Fijians are being urged to prepare for heavy rain, thunderstorms and possible flash flooding, with a Heavy Rain Alert now in force for the entire country.

The Fiji Meteorological Service yesterday warned that an active trough of low pressure north of the country is moving south and is expected to affect Fiji from tomorrow through to Wednesday.

Forecasters said rain would initially develop over the northwestern parts of the country before spreading nationwide.

According to the weather office, cloudy periods and showers are expected over most areas, with rain becoming frequent and heavy from tomorrow.

The system is also expected to bring squally thunderstorms.

The Fiji Meteorological Service warned that the deteriorating weather could lead to flash flooding in flood-prone and low-lying communities, including informal settlements, businesses and Irish crossings.

Motorists have also been advised to exercise caution as wet roads and reduced visibility could create dangerous driving conditions.

Possible impacts include traffic disruptions caused by flooded crossings, surface flooding in urban areas with poor drainage and hazardous travel conditions during periods of intense rainfall.

Members of the public are being encouraged to monitor the latest weather updates and take necessary precautions as the system approaches.
