The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a heavy rain warning for the entire Fiji group, with strong winds expected to develop over parts of the country later this week.
In an update issued at 3pm today, the weather office said a slow-moving trough of low pressure is affecting the group, bringing cloud, showers and periods of heavy rain, with a few thunderstorms expected over the coming days.
A strong wind alert is now in force for land areas of Yasawa, Mamanuca, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Lau and the Lomaiviti Group, while a strong wind alert also remains in force over Fiji waters. Strong northerly winds are forecast to develop from Wednesday.
The Fiji Meteorological Service warned that heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding in flood-prone and low-lying areas, including informal settlements, businesses and Irish crossings, causing traffic disruptions. Urban areas with poor drainage may experience surface flooding, while wet roads and reduced visibility during heavy downpours increase the risk of road accidents.
Significant rainfall has already been recorded across several parts of the country in the past 24 hours. Wairikicake recorded 91 millimetres of rain, Dreketilailai 82.5mm, Nanoko 81.5mm, Udu Point 79.5mm, Keiyasi 70mm and Bukuyava 56mm.
The weather office said occasional rain, heavy at times with thunderstorms, is expected today, with rain becoming more frequent from tomorrow.
The Fiji Meteorological Service will continue to monitor the system and update warnings and forecasts as conditions change. Members of the public are urged to stay informed through official advisories on www.met.gov.fj and the service’s social media platforms.
