Mr Ditoka said that flash floods have been observed in parts of Sigatoka Town, Lawaqa Road, and other low-lying areas in Sigatoka.

He said a high intensity rainfall has been recorded in the area over the past hour, coinciding with high tide, which has caused flash flooding.

“Our teams in the Western Division are working closely with the Sigatoka Town Council and the Fiji Police to control movement in the town,” he said

“In light of this, we urge communities to adhere to the following advice: please refrain from unnecessary travel or movement during this period of heavy rain.”

He also confirmed that the National Emergency Operations Center was closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the respective divisional emergency operations centers, responding to needs as required.

Precautionary measures

“We ask parents please ensure the safety of children and family members by keeping them indoors. Also, do not attempt to cross flooded streams, rivers, or bridges.”

Mr Ditoka also mentioned that traffic disruptions and possible road closures are anticipated. Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution and avoid crossing flooded roads.

A flash flood alert remains in effect for all low-lying, flood-prone areas, and small streams in Vanua Levu, Lami, Suva, Nausori, Tailevu, and Naitasiri.

He added that a heavy rain warning remains in force for the Northern Division, while a heavy rain alert remains in effect for the Central and Eastern Divisions, as well as the Yasawa Group.

Mr Ditoka explained that a trough of low pressure lies slowly moving over the Fiji group, bringing associated cloud, rain, and showers.

The weather is expected to gradually ease from the west later today and clear the Fiji group by Thursday.
