Fijians have been urged to stay alert as Tropical Cyclone Vaianu intensifies and threatens to bring widespread heavy rain, flooding and rough seas across the country.

The cyclone, now a category three system, was located near 16.8S 174.0E or about 380km west of Yasawa-i-Rara and 380km west-northwest of Nadi at 3:00am today.

Acting Permanent Secretary for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Mitieli Cama said while the cyclone is not expected to make direct landfall, he warned its impacts would be felt nationwide.

“The slow movement of this system increases the risk of prolonged heavy rainfall, flash flooding, landslides, strong winds, and rough seas,” Mr Cama said.

A Heavy Rain Warning and Flash Flood Alert are in force for the whole of Fiji.

Authorities confirmed evacuation centres had been activated in parts of the Eastern Division, including Rakiraki, Lawaki and Nakasaleka, where several families have already taken shelter.

Officials are advising residents, particularly those in low-lying areas, to move to higher ground early if necessary and avoid crossing flooded roads and rivers.

People are also urged to secure homes and boats, limit travel, stay away from the sea and check on vulnerable members of their communities.

Farmers have been advised to move livestock to safer ground.

All schools will be closed with parents and guardians urged to closely supervise children.

Mr Cama said Fijians should prepare emergency kits, charge devices and be ready to evacuate if advised.

He also urged the public to rely on official updates from the Fiji Meteorological Service and the National Disaster Management Office and avoid sharing unverified information.

“Let us remain alert, prepared, and look out for one another during this time,” he said.
