Tropical Cyclone Vaianu is expected to intensify into a Category 3 system as it tracks south-southeast over open waters, while hazardous weather conditions continue to affect Fiji.
The system, which developed from Tropical Depression TD11F in the early hours of this morning, was officially named Tropical Cyclone Vaianu after reaching cyclone intensity.
At 4am, the cyclone was located about 580 kilometres west-northwest of Yasawa-i-Rara and moving south-southeast at approximately 9 kilometres per hour.
Weather officials say the centre of the cyclone is not expected to directly impact Fiji, as it is forecast to pass over waters between Fiji and Vanuatu.
However, associated rainbands and strong north to northwesterly winds are expected to continue affecting the country.
A heavy rain warning remains in force for the entire Fiji group, with persistent rainfall and thunderstorms expected in the coming days.
Strong wind warnings are also in place for land areas including Vanua Levu, the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, the western half of Viti Levu, and Kadavu, as well as for all Fiji waters.
Authorities have also maintained a flash flood alert nationwide, warning of possible flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
Fijians are being urged to remain vigilant, monitor weather updates, and take necessary precautions, particularly when travelling or living in vulnerable areas.
Further updates are expected as the system continues to develop.
