Yasawa villagers act early as cyclone threat builds

Villagers in the Yasawas are taking early action as Tropical Cyclone Vaianu approaches, securing homes and preparing evacuation centres.
Communities in Vuaki, Yaqeta and Nacula have begun precautionary measures.
As of 6am, strong winds and periods of heavy rain were affecting parts of the Yasawas as Tropical Cyclone Vaianu moved closer to Fiji.

Vuaki village headman Etuate Saukuru said they moved quickly after hearing advisories from authorities and the media.
“We removed all solar panels and started putting up shutters and securing doors and roofs. Our evacuation centre, the village hall, is prepared for those who need shelter.
“There will be heavy rain and flooding, and we are prepared. We do not take any precaution lightly — that is what we always emphasise here in the Yasawas. Whenever authorities issue an advisory, we act and adhere to it.
“It is my role as village headman to enforce all advisory measures from authorities,” he said.
Yaqeta headman Taniela Lagilagi said similar steps were taken in his village.
“We brought all boats onto land and villagers started putting up shutters. We are experiencing heavy rain at the moment,” he said.
Villagers in Nacula are also taking precautions.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO) is urging all Fijians to remain alert and begin early preparations as Tropical Depression 11F develops north of the country.
Authorities are advising the public to stay informed through official updates, prepare emergency kits, secure loose items, review household plans and exercise caution at sea.
As of 6am today, Tropical Depression 11F was located north of Fiji and moving slowly, with winds of about 25 knots near its centre. The system has become more organised over the past 24 hours and may strengthen into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 to 48 hours.
The NDRMO said it was closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the Fiji Meteorological Service and other agencies.
The Ministry of Education has confirmed all schools will remain closed as Cyclone Vaianu intensifies to Category 2.
The ministry said all students, including boarders, should remain at home, while tertiary institutions have been advised to make their own decisions.
Education Minister Aseri Radrodro urged parents and guardians to closely monitor children and ensure they do not attempt to cross flooded creeks, rivers or drains.
Children are also advised not to swim in rivers, creeks or the sea during this period.
Heads of schools have been directed to liaise with district education offices and provide updates, including on schools being used as evacuation centres.
