150 golfers confirmed for Girmit Open
A $15,000 sponsorship from Extra Supermarket has boosted the two-day Girmit Open Golf Championship, with 150 golfers expected to compete at the Fiji Golf Club in Vatuwaqa from today.

Extra Supermarket has injected a $15,000 sponsorship to the two-day Girmit Open Golf Championship at Fiji Golf Club in Vatuwaqa, Suva.
The tournament begins today and ends on Saturday.
Girmit Open Golf committee chairman Satya Shandil said yesterday a total of 150 golfers are expected to participate in the tournament.
“It’s an annual event for us and it also tied to the Fiji trials that will happen. This is first phase,” he said.
Shandil said their organisation has been with Fiji Golf for four years.
“We have Extra Supermarket on board who are assisting us to ensure that younger people are taking part,” he said.
“We are excited to meet these people and we want to ensure that our people are benefiting from this tournament.”
Shandil said they are expecting to improve their tournament in the next few years.
“We want to ensure that our golfers will reap the benefits that will be given out as the prices that are given out is quite big this year. We want to ensure that the event becomes meaningful to everybody that takes part as we move on.”
The Girmit Open Golf Championship has attracted notable names in the golf circle like the late President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau and current Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
This is one of the events where we meet everybody,” Shandil said.
“This is the most looked forward golf event, in Fiji and it’s mostly likely because of the sponsors as the prises are good.”
Extra Supermarket senior marketing officer Dhiraj Singh said their organisation purpose is to serve Fijian community.
“We ensure that this type of tournament receives that extra experience,” he said.
“We want to encourage everyone to come and enjoy the experience of the tournament.”
Extra Supermarket has also given $5825 worth of shopping vouchers to the tournament for the respective winners of each categories.
