Fiji’s top-ranked golfer, Shakeel Pillay, won the Sangam Golf Championship at Denarau Golf and Racquet Club on Sunday.

He carded 77 to claim the overall gross title, while Sarvesh Dewan took the overall net with 67 on countback.

“I’m very happy to be part of Sangam celebrating its centennial, especially as I’ve been training overseas,” Pillay said.

“I didn’t play my best golf today, but it got the job done. I’m proud to be part of this tournament in Sangam’s 100th year, and it feels special to win one of the cultural events I’m part of.

“I’ve been carrying a left-hand injury, so it was challenging, but I managed to push through. The course was in good condition overall.”

Sangam Golf chairman Wella Pillay said the tournament was a success.

“We had a full field of 104 golfers. The turnout was great and the weather was favourable.”

Suva based Tomasi Tuivuna took out the professional division.
