McDonald’s Fiji Drua Women head coach Mike Legge has made it clear that his side’s ultimate goal is to win the Super W title this season.

As the Drua prepare for a crucial Round Four clash against the Queensland Reds in Brisbane on Saturday, Legge said every match from now on is a step towards achieving championship success.

“Obviously, our aspiration is to win this competition,” Legge said.

The Drua head into the match on the back of consecutive victories knowing a win over the Reds will secure a home semifinal at Churchill Park in Lautoka.

While a home semifinal remains a major incentive, Legge said the focus is building the consistency needed to challenge for the title.

“My goal this weekend is for the girls to play more consistently over the full 80 minutes.

“We continue to play in patches. Last weekend we had a strong start and finish, but there is a lot we need to improve in between those periods.”

While Drua defeated Brumbies 42-25 last weekend, Legge believes discipline remains one of the biggest obstacles standing between the team and a championship winning campaign.

“Discipline is still a real concern for us. Over the last two games we’ve given away too many lazy penalties.

“It’s a mental thing. We defended well for periods, but then slipped back into old habits. Those are the areas we’re reviewing and working hard to fix.”

Legge expects another stern challenge against a Reds side boasting a powerful forward pack led by Wallaroos stars Eva Karpani and Fiji-born Tanya Kalounivale.

“They are a very physical side with some strong ball carriers. We expect a direct style of rugby and we have prepared accordingly.

“We’ve looked at ways to counter their strengths while continuing to play our brand of rugby.”

Despite a few injury concerns, Legge said the squad was excited about the challenge ahead.

“The girls are ready to go. We have a few niggles at this stage of the season, but they are manageable and we’re travelling with a strong squad.”

For Legge, the equation is simple — beat the Reds, secure a home semifinal and move one step closer to lifting the Super W trophy.

A victory in Brisbane would not only strengthen the Drua’s title credentials but also bring finals rugby back to Fiji, with Churchill Park poised to host a historic semifinal next weekend.
