About 31 swimmers will be competing in 34 events in the Open Nationals at the National Aquatic Centre in Suva this weekend.

National swimming coach Willie Elaisa said yesterday the tournament serves as a platform to select the final squad for the Oceania swim competition.

“Fiji is hosting the Oceania swim competition in May,” Elaisa said.

“The Oceania competition will have the final selection for the Commonwealth Games in July.”

He added that swimmers have prepared well for the Open nationals with the aim to qualify for the Oceania competition.

“I’m actually looking forward to seeing some fast swims.

“I know the numbers are low but the 31 swimmers here are the best that Fiji has to offer at the moment locally.”

Elaisa said overseas swimmers would submit their results from their respective locations.

“It’s a good opportunity for them to show that they are mentally ready as well,” he said.

“I know we have some mature swimmers who are very focused on what they want to achieve so hopefully they’ll influence the younger ones as well.”

Elaisa said the swimmers need to be focused and disciplined in Open nationals.

“Ultimately you’re going to have to manage your time very well,” he said.

“If there’s back to back events, you’re not going to have enough time for recovery and you need to eat the right thing at the right time to make sure your racing is at maximum potential.”

Elaisa said swimmers need to know their goals and work towards it.

The competition starts today and ends on Sunday.
