Over 300 Fijians undergo open-heart surgery for free at Lautoka Hospital

Over 300 Fijian patients have successfully undergone open-heart surgery completely free of cost at the Lautoka Hospital, which is managed by Aspen Medical.

This was made possible through a partnership formed between MIOT International, Chennai, India, and Health Care (Fiji) Pte Ltd, trading as Aspen Medical. This partnership aims to transform cardiac care in Fiji.

The hospital now offers advanced procedures such as minimally invasive (keyhole) heart bypass surgeries, diagnostic angiograms, angioplasty, and heart vessel stenting, making world-class cardiac care accessible locally.

Since May 2025, the newly commissioned Philips Cath Lab at Lautoka Hospital has enabled nearly 400 angiograms, and the partnership is set to launch angioplasty and stenting services next week. These developments mark a significant leap in Fiji’s journey toward comprehensive cardiac care.

In a media statement shared from MIOT International and Aspen Medical, the partnership has made world-class heart care accessible to every Fijian, reducing the need for overseas travel for complex cardiac procedures.

“This milestone reflects a shared vision of excellence and commitment between MIOT International and Aspen Medical. Lautoka Hospital has been equipped by Aspen Medical with cutting-edge technology, including a state-of-the-art Philips Cath Lab, ultra-modern operating theatres, and dedicated intensive care units designed for cardiac patients.

“Paired with MIOT International’s renowned cardiothoracic expertise and decades of experience in global healthcare delivery, this partnership has elevated Fiji’s cardiac care standards to international levels,” the statement read.

The collaboration began in 2022 and has already saved the lives of more than 700 Fijians, thanks to a dedicated 35-member MIOT cardiac team stationed at Lautoka Hospital. Aspen Medical has equipped the facility with ultra-modern operating theatres and dedicated cardiac intensive care units, while MIOT brings decades of global expertise.
