For Maryanne Delana, today was more than just a graduation ceremony — it was a birthday gift, a personal victory, and the fulfilment of a promise after years of sacrifice and hardship.

The Fiji Corrections Service officer proudly graduated with a Diploma in Quantity Surveying from the Fiji National University, completing a journey that began more than a decade ago.

Originally from Nabouwalu in Bua, with maternal ties to Kese in Naviti Island, Ms Delana said completing her studies was something she had carried in her heart for many years.

“Today is very special for me because it is my birthday and also my graduation day,” she said.

Ms Delana first began her studies years ago, but work and family responsibilities forced her to pause her education.

Determined not to give up, she returned to complete her remaining courses while continuing her duties with the Fiji Corrections Service.

In 2024, she completed five units in the second semester before finishing her final two units this year.

Her journey was not without challenges. In 2012, her father passed away after a long illness — a loss that deeply affected her family and strengthened her resolve to succeed.

“I dedicate this certificate to my late father and my family in Bua,” she said emotionally.

The family also endured another difficult moment in 2016 when their home was badly damaged during a cyclone, forcing them to rebuild their lives while supporting one another.

Despite the hardships, Ms Delana never gave up on her dream.

An emotional moment came when her mother, Bernadette Kateia Delana, travelled from Bua to witness her daughter walk across the graduation stage.

As graduates celebrated with flowers, photographs and family embraces, Ms Delana’s story stood out as a reminder that success is often built on years of patience, sacrifice and determination.
