Exhaustion, responsibility and determination defined the journey of Vanisha Vanshika Charan, who survived nights of just two to three hours of sleep while balancing heavy family duties before emerging as the Best Outstanding Student in Bachelor of Commerce.

The eldest of five siblings from Ba, Ms Charan was recognised not only as a graduate but also as one of the top achievers in her field, marking a proud milestone for her family.

She graduated from the Fiji National University yesterday at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva.

“I’m feeling a bit emotional and proud as well, excited,” she said after receiving the award.

Her university journey was shaped by the constant demands of being the eldest sibling, often balancing academic deadlines with responsibilities at home while studying full-time.

“Being the eldest, it was not easy to balance my assignments with my siblings’ work and assignments,” Ms Charan said.

The pressure intensified during exam periods, when she often sat for two papers in a single day and stayed up all night preparing.

“I had only two to three hours sleep. I had to study all night,” she said.

Despite exhaustion and moments of doubt, Ms Charan said her parents were her strongest motivation, encouraging her to push through when the pressure became overwhelming.

“They were the ones supporting me,” she said.

Her achievement carries even deeper meaning as she is a former dux of A.D. Patel College, continuing a pattern of academic excellence that has made her family proud.

Now a graduate with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, Ms Charan said the award is not just a personal success but a shared victory with her parents, who stood firmly behind her throughout her studies.

For young people in Fiji, especially those who have dropped out of school, her message is simple:

“Don’t give up, study hard and make your dreams come true,” she said.

Her story reflects the reality of many students who succeed quietly behind closed doors through sacrifice, responsibility and nights of little rest before stepping into moments of achievement that change their lives and inspire others.
