Ten cane knives, one coil nylon cloth, 12 forks, ten jerry cans and ten seedling trays were given to two youth clubs in Macuata.

Yauca Youth Club from Matailabasa Village and Ligaulevu Youth Club from Mali Island were thankful to the Government for the assistance which would help increase their productivity and income.

The nursery kit was handed over by the Minister for Agriculture Mahendra Reddy on Thursday.

Ligaulevu Youth Club secretary Pita Balebau said they were excited that they hired a boat to cross from Mali Island to Korovatu main land and then trekked 40 minutes to Matailabasa Village to receive their kit.

“We thank the Government for assisting our 35 members back on the island,” Mr Balebau said.

“We plant vegetables and root crops.”

Yauca Youth Club president Nemani Balenayaca said it has only been two months since they registered their club with the Ministry of Youth.

“After the registration we made a special request to the Ministry of Agriculture for assistance because we wanted to invest in rice farming,” Mr Balenayaca said.

“We are planning to use the income from rice farming to build our village’s first evacuation center.”

Minister Reddy advised the club representatives to work together and help each other.

“We encourage more people to invest into farming such as rice, vegetables, root crops and livestock.”
