A young couple from Tailevu and Kadavu are proving that it is never too late to return to education and build a better future.

Jenny Ravavai of Dravo, Bau, Tailevu, and her partner Epeli Valevou of Dravuwalu, Kadavu, both in their early 20s, have enrolled in the Matua Programme, determined to complete their secondary education and open new pathways for themselves.

Mr Valevou is a talented footballer who currently plays for the Rewa Football Association and has represented Fiji at national level. Off the field, the couple helps support their household by selling vegetables at the Nausori Market alongside Ms Ravavai’s parents.

While they are hardworking and motivated, opportunities were limited after both missed sitting their Year 12 examinations in earlier years. Rather than allow that setback to define them, they chose to start again.

“When we heard about the Matua Programme, we thought, why not give it a try?” Ms Ravavai said.

“We decided to do it together so we could support and encourage each other.”

With the rising cost of living and growing responsibilities, the couple said education had become more important than ever.

They believe the programme will help them improve their academic results and eventually continue to tertiary studies.

Studying together has been a key motivator.

“We will study together, help each other and push one another,” Mr Valevou said.

“It makes the journey easier when you’re not alone.”

The couple expressed their gratitude to the Matua Programme teachers for their encouragement, singling out Mr Rajnesh Lingam for his guidance and motivation.

“He reminded us that we have the ability to succeed if we are willing to work hard,” Ms Ravavai said.

As classes begin next week, the couple said they feel hopeful and excited about the future, describing the opportunity as a blessing.

They are also encouraging other young people who left school early to take up the programme.

“Education has no age limit,” Ms Ravavai said.

“If your heart is willing, go for it. One day, your efforts will pay off.”
