A group of women in Fiji has finished a special training to help them become stronger leaders in climate work.

The ‘hearing,’ at the Fiji Learning Institute for Public Service (FLIPS) in Nasese, Suva on Friday was led by the Asian Development Bank and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.

Women from different organisations took part, creating a supportive space for learning and sharing ideas.

Five participants represented the Fiji National University (FNU): Amelia Turagabeci, Mereia Fong, Litia Narube, Jasmine Hussain, and Selita Bolanavanua.

Ministry permanent secretary Sivendra Michael told the group they should use what they learned to make real change.

“The world does not need you to simply participate in existing systems. It needs you to reshape them,” he said, encouraging them to make sure climate action works for everyone.

Ms Turagabeci said the training was empowering and helped build confidence. She also said it reminded participants to take care of themselves so they can lead well.

Facilitator Arriane Olegario thanked the Ministry for supporting the programme.

As the first group of its kind in Fiji, the participants now move forward as part of a growing effort to support women leaders and build stronger climate action across the country.
