'Know where your children are during holidays'

Fiji Teachers Union (FTU) general secretary Muniappa Goundar has urged parents to closely monitor their children during the two-week school holidays, including knowing where they are, who they are with and how they spend their time.

Mr Goundar said parents and guardians should use the school break to take an active interest in their children’s wellbeing, behaviour and learning.

“Parents, please know where your children are, who they are with and how they spend their time,” Mr Goundar said.

“Parents’ guidance, love and supervision can make a tremendous difference.”

He encouraged families to use the holidays as an opportunity to spend quality time together and provide children with support and guidance.

Mr Goundar also encouraged students to enjoy their well-deserved break but reminded them that the holidays should not be devoted only to entertainment.

“Students should use their time wisely by reading books, revising what they have learnt, helping at home, developing good habits and staying away from activities that may put their safety, future or reputation at risk,” he said.

He also urged students to behave responsibly both online and in their communities.

“Students, please be responsible, respectful and disciplined, both online and in your communities. Your education is the foundation of your future, so never lose sight of your goals.”

Mr Goundar also acknowledged teachers for their work, commitment and sacrifices during term two.

“To the teachers, I want to say that your contribution to shaping the future of our children is deeply appreciated,” he said.

“To all the students, parents and teachers, stay safe, stay positive and make every day count.”

Students will return for the third school term on September 8.
