Residents say overflowing chamber has left community living with foul stench

Residents of Tavela Housing in Korovuto, Nadi, are urging authorities to address an overflowing underground chamber they say has left the community exposed to foul-smelling stagnant water for more than a year.

Residents living along Namatua Street claim the problem began during housing development in the area and has remained unresolved.

“We believe water from an overflowing underground chamber is flowing into roadside drains, creating a persistent stench that has become a daily health concern for families,” residents said.

“Schoolchildren use the road every day, while babies, elderly residents and people with existing illnesses are among those most affected by the unbearable odour.”

Residents also claim poor drainage has caused stagnant water to collect around homes and in roadside drains, creating mosquito breeding grounds, raising concerns about possible health risks.

They say the situation worsens during wet weather, with the chamber overflowing, drains spilling over and water remaining trapped due to the lack of a proper outlet.

Residents claim no comprehensive assessment has been carried out despite the issue continuing for more than a year.

They are calling on authorities to inspect the overflowing chamber, improve the drainage system and address the risks posed to the community.

Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Nalumisa said the matter had not previously been brought to his attention.

“This is the first time I’m hearing this. I need to get this from my consultants before I comment on this,” Mr Nalumisa said.

“Why didn’t the residents bring this up when we were doing the development? I’ve been there so many times. This is the first time I’m hearing about this issue.”

Mr Nalumisa has taken the matter on board and will direct his team on the ground to assess the issue in consultation with the various agencies involved in the project.
