A major search and rescue operation is underway in the Lau Group for a 68-year-old man who disappeared at sea after taking his newly acquired boat on a test run.

The man, from Udu Village on Totoya Island, left on Thursday aboard his white fibreglass boat, Jahaziah, intending to travel from Udu towards the Cakauloaloa reef.

However, he failed to return to the village, sparking concern among family members and residents.

His wife later reported the matter, prompting the formation of a search party involving villagers, Police and maritime authorities.

Joint search and rescue efforts are now being coordinated by the Republic of Fiji Navy, local communities and Police as authorities race against time to locate the missing man.

The Rescue Coordination Centre Fiji is overseeing the operation, with a Navy vessel deployed to assist in the search of waters around Totoya and nearby reef systems.

Police said maritime communities and seafarers operating in the area are being urged to remain vigilant and report any sightings of the vessel or its occupant.

Anyone with information that could assist the search is requested to contact the Rescue Coordination Centre Fiji on 1681.

Authorities have not released further details as the search continues.
