Fiji Ships & Heavy Industry Limited (FSHIL), a subsidiary of Fiji Ports, is taking steps to protect the oceans and reduce its environmental impact.

Nestled in the heart of Walu Bay, Suva, this company, specialising in ship repair and maintenance, is committed to aligning its operations with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2023 theme, “MARPOL at 50 - Our commitment goes on.

“The International Maritime Organization’s theme for this year underscores its unwavering dedication to safeguarding the world’s oceans from the detrimental impacts of maritime activities,” said FSHIL.

“At the core of this commitment lies the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, or MARPOL, which plays a pivotal role in shaping global regulations for cleaner maritime practices.”

Fiji Ships & Heavy Industry has taken up the mantle of responsibility and is actively working towards MARPOL’s objectives, aiming to minimise the environmental footprint of vessels during their operations.

Their approach incorporates a suite of eco-friendly practices that include ecofriendly hull cleaning methods, such as high-pressure water blasting, and the application of TBTfree antifouling coatings.

These measures not only prolong the lifespan of vessels but also contribute to a significant reduction in fuel consumption, ultimately leading to a substantial decrease in harmful emissions.

By embracing these environmentally conscious practices, FSHIL has become a driving force in the global Endeavor to safeguard the environment.

As global shipping activities continue to surge, companies like Fiji Ships & Heavy Industry are leading the way as responsible maritime stewards, ensuring that our oceans remain vibrant and healthy for future generations.

Fiji Ships & Heavy Industry’s commitment to cleaner seas sets a precedent for the entire maritime industry, proving that profitability and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.

Their dedication is especially poignant as the world celebrates the 50th anniversary of MARPOL in 2023.

In an era where sustainability and environmental consciousness are paramount, Fiji Ships & Heavy Industry’s proactive approach serves as an inspiration to us all.

Their journey towards a greener future is a testament to the fact that, with determination and innovation, the maritime industry can steer towards a brighter and more sustainable horizon.
