Rayana Kumar crowned Science Dux of Labasa College
Determined student aims to become a doctor after excelling in annual exams

Devoting close to six to eight hours per day to study for her exams, shows the determination of Rayana Kumar, to excel after she was awarded the science dux of Labasa College.
A week out from the annual examination, she engaged in home study where her daily routine was going through complex concepts to strengthen her ability to score higher marks and beat her competitors.
Miss Kumar scored 376 out of 400 marks in her annual exam and aims to score over 360 in the Fiji Year 13 Certificate Examination (FY13CE) which would be released soon.

The 18-year-old wants to become a medical doctor and believes her most important journey starts from next year.
When approached on what inspired her to compete for the dux award, Miss Kumar , said she wanted to attain a quality mark both in the internals and externals.
Being enrolled in a highly competitive college in the Northern Division, Miss Kumar , said good competition motivated her to push her limits.
She has never finished second in the annual exams and from Years 1 to Year 13, always attained the first prize.
Her parents and teachers were credited for helping her succeed in her journey.
Miss Kumar was also the dux of the Shiri Guru Nanak Primary School.
Studying in a class of 43 students, every student possessed a challenge she boldly took to claim the dux prize.
Building up towards the final few days before the annual exam began, Miss Kumar , said she had sleepless nights.
Why being a doctor matters?
Miss Kumar said while many opt to join the medical field because of the lucrative salary, she said she wants a better standard of life; however, patient care is also priority.
She said they were no doctors in the family and she wants to be the first and be a medium to ensure her family members received the best medical care.
The youngest of two siblings, Miss Kumar , resides at Naodamu which is a few kilometres from Labasa Town and said all resources were at her disposal.
Brought up by parents of both teaching backgrounds, Miss Kumar , said the pressure to deliver quality marks kept her focused on the journey.
"There was no room for lapse of concentration in my studies because every day I had set my short time goals which at the end led to the success of the long-time goal," she added.
