Taxi driver rejects confession and eyewitness claims in murder trial

A 47-year-old taxi driver charged with the murder of his de facto partner has denied killing her and told the High Court in Lautoka that she had assaulted him in the past.

Daniel Francis Prasad appeared before Justice Aruna Aluthge on Tuesday, where he is charged with one count of murder.

Prasad is accused of murdering his 28-year-old de facto partner, Karishma, at their home in Kerebula, Nadi.

The court heard that on April 27, 2025, Prasad allegedly argued with Karishma before striking her on the lower part of her head and neck with a cane knife, causing fatal injuries. She died at the scene.

The prosecution alleges the couple's three children were at home and witnessed the incident. The court also heard that Karishma was about 31 weeks pregnant at the time of her death.

During cross-examination, the prosecution questioned Prasad about the couple's relationship, previous disputes and the events leading up to April 27.

The prosecution also challenged him on allegations of past domestic violence, witness testimony and his conduct after the incident.

Prasad denied all allegations, including claims that he assaulted Karishma, confessed to Police or showed no remorse.

The prosecution referred to evidence from a neighbour who testified she saw Prasad standing beside Karishma's body holding a knife.

Prasad said he picked up the knife only to protect himself.

The prosecution also alleged that one of the couple's sons witnessed the killing.

Prasad denied the allegation, insisting the children were neither crying nor present when the incident allegedly occurred.

The prosecution further alleged that Prasad confessed to Police officers at the scene and later at the police station. Prasad denied making any confession.

The matter has been adjourned, with the State's closing submissions scheduled for August 19.
