The number of vehicles being searched resulting in the confiscation of marijuana by Police highway patrol teams is on the rise.

Fiji Police Chief Operations Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Livai Driu said the Hibiscus Highway (Labasa to Savusavu) was a major route where police had stopped and searched vehicles.

“For the Northern Division, there are now a lot of indicators, on the highway when we do traffic stop check,” ACP Driu said.

“We’ve been making arrests after searching vehicles and we have found people have been carrying marijuana to Labasa and Savusavu.”

ACP Driu said the only people who profit from the illegal drug trade were the cultivators and distributors; the rest of society bears the social and health consequences.

“In some of the arrests made, we seized white powders. It’s a new trend for the north,” he said.

“We will continue to fight the war against drugs, not only with green, but also on other drugs like methamphetamine and cocaine.”
