Sabeto village headman Irami Bokoi is calling for Government to be accountable to its promises leading up to the elections.

Mr Bokoi made the submission to the Constitution Review Commission (CRC) on Friday in Nadi.

“Villagers are tired of hearing promises that never materialise, despite repeated assurances from politicians over the years,” Mr Bokoi said.

“Government must be made to honour commitments made to the people, particularly those involving essential development projects,” he said.

“Before elections, they come here and make promises because we have one of the populated areas in Nadi, but after the elections, nothing happens. We are still waiting for the things that were promised leading up to the last election.”

He told commissioners that population in Nagado has grown to more than 3000 people, with over 500 households, increasing the demand for better infrastructure and public services.

Among the concerns raised were long-promised upgrades to the three village halls and improvements to the roads.

“The condition of some roads affects transportation and access to services, particularly for children travelling to school,” he said.

“The rapidly growing population needs support to help the village plan housing, community facilities and basic infrastructure.

“We place our trust on leaders to improve living conditions but promises never to eventuate.

“Promises made to communities should not end with election campaigns but should lead to improvements to impact people’s lives.”
