At just 29, Katarina Vulitikovakacegu is proving that strength and determination know no bounds.
A single mother and the sole breadwinner for her family, she has carved out a remarkable career in the Fiji Corrections Service, a profession traditionally dominated by men.
Originally from Nacokaika, Naitasiri, Ms Vulitikovakacegu was raised in the highlands by her grandparents.

Her upbringing in the village taught her independence, resilience, and the value of hard work.
“Being raised in the village wasn’t always easy,” she said.
“Peer pressure is real, even in rural areas. I’m grateful for my family’s guidance, it taught me to be strong and focused.”
Ms Vulitikovakacegu joined the Corrections Service in 2022 through the basic recruitment program, midway through her university studies at the Fiji National University.
Since then, she has dedicated herself to her role, learning the skills and discipline needed to serve her community while balancing the responsibilities of raising her seven-year-old daughter and supporting her parents and grandparents.
“Being in the service is not by accident,” she said. “It’s God’s calling, and it’s a privilege. I feel blessed to be part of this organisation.”
Ms Vulitikovakacegu sees her journey as more than personal success.
She has a message for women, especially those from rural areas: “Step out of your comfort zone, believe in yourself, and know your worth. Nothing is impossible.”
