A Nairai village representative is urging education authorities to include the Constitution in the school curriculum.

He said students should be taught the nation’s supreme law from an early age to better understand their rights and responsibilities.

During the 2013 Constitution Review Consultation (CRC) held at Tovulailai Village Hall in Nairai, Lomaiviti yesterday, community representative Simione Bulusaya highlighted the importance of introducing constitutional studies into school curricula across the country.

“The Constitution is the supreme law of the land, and our children should know and understand it,” Mr Bulusaya told CRC officials and villagers gathered at the meeting.

“If students are taught the Constitution in schools, they will grow up understanding their rights, responsibilities, and the role they play in society.”

The CRC drew villagers, community leaders and education advocates who raised concerns about the lack of awareness among young people regarding constitutional rights and civic responsibilities.

Many participants agreed that teaching the Constitution in schools would help build informed citizens and strengthen democracy in Fiji.

Mr Bulusaya said constitutional education would also encourage students to participate more actively in national discussions and future decision-making processes.

“Our young people are future leaders of this country,” he said. “By teaching them the Constitution, we are preparing them to make wise decisions and protect the values of the nation.”

The CRC continues to travel across communities in Fiji, gathering public views and recommendations aimed at shaping a Constitution that reflects the voices and aspirations of all citizens.
