Team Fiji weightlifting aims to improve by setting new personal bests (PB’s) at the Oceania Weightlifting Championship (OWC) at Apia, Samoa.

The team arrived in Samoa last Thursday as the championship got underway yesterday.

The OWC serves as a qualification event for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23-August 2.

Weightlifting Fiji coach Henry Elder told SUNsports yesterday their team would need to improve on their performance if they want to gain medals.

“We aim to improve in both lifts and set new PB’s. If they do, then we’ll be bringing home some silverware or medals,” he said.

Elder said if they focus on what they can control; other things will fall in place.

He said the OWC is significant to their lifters.

“It’s the last opportunity for our lifters to push for Games spots as there’s only eight available spots with another three going to top contenders from each continent and the host country,” he said.

Elder acknowledged the Fiji National Sports Commission (FNSC) for their support towards the team.
