A former Natabua High School student has completed her nursing studies in New Zealand, fulfilling a long-held dream to help others.
Avantika Dass, 22, graduated on May 22 with a Bachelor of Nursing from the Manukau Institute of Technology after three years of study.
Originally from Lautoka, Ms Dass attended Drasa Avenue School and Natabua High School before moving to New Zealand in 2023.

She said nursing was not always part of her career plan, but her interest grew during her later years in high school.
“Honestly, not completely. I always knew I wanted to do something where I could help people, but I didn’t fully realise nursing was for me until I got older,” she said.
“The more I learned about it, the more I loved how personal and meaningful it is. Nursing isn’t just about clinical skills, it’s about being there for people during difficult moments, and that really connected with me.”
Ms Dass said she was drawn to nursing because it combined compassion with practical care.
“You get to support people when they’re vulnerable, advocate for them, and sometimes make a really stressful situation a little less scary.
“I also love that every day is different and there’s always something new to learn. It’s challenging, but it’s also really rewarding.”
She dedicated her achievement to her family and friends for their support throughout her studies.
“I especially want to dedicate it to my parents, Abinesh Dass and Bikashni Prasad, for always believing in me and encouraging me every step of the way,” she said.
“I also want to dedicate it to my aunt and uncle, Arishma and Parnish Gounder, along with my grandfather Govind Gounder and grandmother Damayanti Gounder.”
Ms Dass said living with her aunt’s family during her studies gave her strong support away from home.
“They supported me through the stressful moments, reminded me to keep going, and made overseas life feel like home,” she said.
“I honestly wouldn’t have gotten through this journey the same way without them.”
She is now looking forward to starting her career as a registered nurse.
“I still have so much to learn, and I’m looking forward to gaining experience and building confidence in myself,” she said.
Her father, Abinesh Dass, said the family was proud of her achievement.
“Your hard work, dedication and determination have truly paid off,” he said.
“Congratulations my sweet daughter, you have done it. Wishing you all the very best in your career and future journey. May you continue to shine, achieve great success and make all your dreams come true.”
